Introduction

Kane County, with the county seat of Geneva, has a population of 515,269 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county, named for Elias Kane, a U.S. Senator and the first Secretary of State of Illinois, is the fifth-most populous county of Illinois.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Kane County has a total area of 524 square miles, of which 520 square miles consists of land and 4.1 square miles is water. There is an extensive forest preserve program in Kane County, with numerous preserves, historic sites, and trails. 

Major Highways

Kane County has an extensive county highway system, as well as several hospitals, transportation services, and the Aurora Municipal Airport, keeping its roadways quite busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, parking accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Kane County had 10,792 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 28 were fatal, 2,944 resulted in injuries, and 405 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Kane County include:  Interstate 88, Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 30, U.S. Highway 34, Illinois Route 19, Illinois Route 25, Illinois Route 31, Illinois Route 38, Illinois Route 47, Illinois Route 56, Illinois Route 58, Illinois Route 62, Illinois Route 64, Illinois Route 68, Illinois Route 72, Illinois Route 110, Kane County Route 17, and Randall Road.

Climate and Weather

Kane County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 84 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 10 °F during winter. On average, Kane County gets 38.4 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Kane County has approximately 170,479 households with 54.2% of these households consisting of married couples and 42.3% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Kane County is $67,767 and the median income for families is $77,998, making Kane County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
