Introduction

Kankakee County, with the county seat of Kankakee, has a population of 113,449 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named for the Kankakee River. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Kankakee County has a total area of 681 square miles, of which 677 square miles consists of land and 4.8 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Kankakee County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, and factories, keeping its roadways busy, as well as several railways running through the area. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Kankakee County had 2,227 motor vehicle accidents. The major highways that run through Kankakee County include: Interstate 57, U.S. Highway 45, U.S. Highway 52, Illinois Route 1, Illinois Route 17, Illinois Route 50, Illinois Route 102, Illinois Route 113, Illinois Route 114, and Illinois Route 115.

Climate and Weather

Kankakee County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 86 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 12 °F during winter. On average, Kankakee County gets 38.6 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Kankakee County has approximately 41,511 households with 49.1% of these households consisting of married couples and 35.2% with children under the age of 18.
