Introduction

Lawrence County, with the county seat of Lawrenceville, has a population of 16,883 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named for Captain James Lawrence, who famously said, “Don’t give up the ship” after being mortally wounded in the War of 1812 while commanding the USS Chesapeake. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Lawrence County has a total area of 374 square miles, of which 372 square miles consists of land and 2.0 square miles consists of water. 

Major Highways

Lawrence County roads and highways are often busy with motor vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Lawrence County had 304 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, four (4) were fatal, 60 resulted in injuries, and 16 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Lawrence County include: U.S. Route 50, Illinois Route 1, Illinois Route 33, and Illinois Route 250.

Climate and Weather

Lawrence County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 18 °F during winter. On average, Lawrence County gets 44.5 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

Lawrence County has approximately 6,130 households with 50.7% of these households consisting of married couples and 28.6% with children under the age of 18. The median household income in Lawrence County is $38,771 and for families the median household income is $45,565, making Lawrence County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
