Introduction

Logan County, with the county seat of Lincoln, has a population of 30,305 according to the most recent U.S. Census. Established in 1839, the county was named for physician and State Representative John Logan, father of Union General John Alexander Logan.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Logan County has a total area of 619 square miles, of which 618 square miles consists of land and 0.9 square miles consists of water. 

Major Highways

Logan County roads and highways are often busy with motor vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Logan County had 578 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, five (5) were fatal, 131 resulted in injuries, and 32 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Logan County include: Interstate 55, Interstate 155, U.S. Highway 136, Illinois Route 10, Illinois Route 54, and Illinois Route 121.

Climate and Weather

Logan County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 86 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 15 °F during winter. On average, Logan County gets 38.3 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Logan County has approximately 12,107 households with 50.3% of these households consisting of married couples and 29.7% with children under the age of 18. The median household income in Logan County is $48,999 and for families the median household income is $63,254, making Logan County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
