Introduction
Macon County, with the county seat of Decatur, has a population of 110,768 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for Nathaniel Macon, a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. Because of its central location, Macon County is also known as “The Heart of Illinois”.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Macon County has a total area of 586 square miles, of which 581 square miles consists of land and 5.2 square miles is water.
Major Highways
Macon County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, manufacturing, retail, and medicine, keeping its roadways busy. Macon County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 17 °F during winter. On average, Macon County gets 39.8 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.
