Introduction
Macoupin County, with the county seat of Carlinville, has a population of 47,765 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named after Macoupin River, which runs near Carlinville and weaves its way southwest to the Illinois River.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Macoupin County has a total area of 868 square miles, of which 863 square miles consists of land and 4.7 square miles is water.

Macoupin County has a large agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, and medicine, keeping its roadways busy.
