Introduction

Madison County, with the county seat of Edwardsville, has a population of 269,282 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named for President James Madison and was established in 1812. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census, Madison County has a total of 741 square miles, of which 716 square miles is land and 25 square miles is water.

Major Highways

Madison County roads and highways are often busy with motor vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Madison County had 5,688 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 41 were fatal, 1,389 resulted in injuries, and 251 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. The major highways that run through Madison County include: I-55, I-87, I-70, I-255, I-270, US 40, US 67, IL 3, IL 4, IL 100,IL 18, IL 162, IL 140, IL 160, IL 143, IL 157, IL 159, IL 111, IL 203, IL 255, and IL 267.

Climate and Weather

Madison County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 90 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 19 °F during winter. On average, Madison County gets 38.6 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Madison County has approximately 108,094 households with 49.3% of these households consisting of married couples and 31.4% with children under the age of 18.
