Introduction
Marion County, with the county seat of Salem, has a population of 39,437 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for Revolutionary War General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox”.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Marion County has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 572 square miles consists of land and 3.7 square miles consists of water.
Major Highways
Marion County roads and highways are often busy with people traveling to and from work and to its numerous attractions. Marion County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 18 °F during winter.
