Introduction

Marshall County, with the county seat of Lacon, has a population of 12,640 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named in honor of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court who died in 1835.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Marshall County has a total area of 399 square miles, of which 387 square miles consists of land and 12 square miles consists of water. 

Major Highways

Marshall County roads and highways are frequently busy with residents traveling back and forth to work, school, and to the activities in the area. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Marshall County had 243 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, five (5) were fatal, 45 resulted in injuries, and five (5) of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Marshall County include: Interstate 39, U.S. Highway 51, Illinois Route 17, Illinois Route 18, Illinois Route 26, Illinois Route 29, Illinois Route 40, Illinois Route 89, Illinois Route 117, and Illinois Route 251. 

Climate and Weather

Marshall County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 15 °F during winter. On average, Marshall County gets 37.8 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

Marshall County has approximately 5,161 households with 56.7% of these households consisting of married couples and 27.4% with children under the age of 18. The median household income in Marshall County is $49,116 and for families the median income is $64,781, making Marshall County a middle-class, family-oriented community.

Marshall County has two school districts. These include:

  • Henry-Senachwine Community Unit School District 5
  • Midland Community Unit School District 7
  • West Carroll Community Unit School District 314
