Introduction

Mason County, with the county seat of Havana, has a population of 14,666 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for George Mason, a member of the Virginia Legislature who campaigned for the adoption of the Bill of Rights. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Mason County has a total area of 563 square miles, of which 539 square miles consists of land and 24 square miles consists of water. 

Major Highways

Mason County roads and highways are often busy with residents traveling between home and work, to and from school, and to local activities. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural trucks, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Mason County had 197 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, two (2) were fatal, 31 resulted in injuries, and 10 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Mason County include: U.S. Highway 136, Illinois Route 10, Illinois Route 29, Illinois Route 78, and Illinois Route 97. 

Climate and Weather

Mason County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 14 °F during winter. On average, Mason County gets 37.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Mason County has approximately 6,079 households with 52.1% of these households consisting of married couples and 28.9% with children under the age of 18. The median household income in Mason County is $42,461 and for families the median income is $51,348, making Mason County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
