Introduction
Massac County, with the county seat of Metropolis, has a population of 15,429 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for a French Fort founded in the 18th century and was established in 1843.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Massac County has a total area of 242 square miles, of which 237 square miles consists of land and 4.6 square miles is water.
Major Highways
Massac County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy, as well as several railways running through the area. Massac County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 90 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 25 °F during winter. On average, Massac County gets 48.0 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.
