McDonough County, with the county seat of Macomb, has a population of 32,612 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for Thomas McDonough, who defeated a British squadron at the Battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812. McDonough County has the unique distinction of forming a perfect square by Mercator map projection and Macomb is situated directly in the center of this square.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, McDonough County has a total area of 590 square miles, of which 589 square miles consists of land and 0.8 square miles is water.
Major Highways
McDonough County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, education, manufacturing, and medicine, keeping its roadways busy, as well as several railways running through the area.
