Introduction

McDonough County, with the county seat of Macomb, has a population of 32,612 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for Thomas McDonough, who defeated a British squadron at the Battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812. McDonough County has the unique distinction of forming a perfect square by Mercator map projection and Macomb is situated directly in the center of this square.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, McDonough County has a total area of 590 square miles, of which 589 square miles consists of land and 0.8 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

McDonough County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, education, manufacturing, and medicine, keeping its roadways busy, as well as several railways running through the area. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, railway crossing accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, McDonough County had 496 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, two (2) were fatal, 71 resulted in injuries, and 10 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through McDonough County include: U.S. Highway 67, U.S. Highway 136, Illinois Route 9, Illinois Route 41, Illinois Route 61, Illinois Route 95, and Illinois Route 110.

Climate and Weather

McDonough County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 13 °F during winter. On average, McDonough County gets 39.3 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

McDonough County has approximately 13,057 households with 40.0% of these households consisting of married couples and 22% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of McDonough County is $33,702 and the median income for families is $52,390, making McDonough County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
