Introduction

McHenry County, with the county seat of Woodstock, has a population of 308,760 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county, named for Major William McHenry, is the sixth most populous county in Illinois. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, McHenry County has a total area of 611 square miles, of which 603 square miles consists of land and 7.6 square miles consists of water. 

Major Highways

McHenry County is home to both mass transportation (Metra Rail) and access to a handful of airports and has been experiencing an explosion in suburbanization which keeps its roads and highways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural trucks, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, McHenry County had 4,662 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 27 were fatal, 1,258 resulted in injuries, and 138 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through McHenry County include: Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 12, U.S. Highway 14, U.S. Highway 20, Illinois Route 22, Illinois Route 23, Illinois Route 31, Illinois Route 47, Illinois Route 62, Illinois Route 120, Illinois Route 173, and Illinois Route 176.

Climate and Weather

McHenry County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 85 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 11 °F during winter. On average, McHenry County gets 36.6 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

McHenry County has approximately 109,199 households with 62.3% of these households consisting of married couples and 40.1% with children under the age of 18. The median household income in McHenry County is $76,482 and for families the median income is $86,698, making McHenry County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
