Introduction

McLean County, with the county seat of Bloomington, has a population of 169,572 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for John McLean, a Senator for Illinois. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, McLean County has a total area of 1,186 square miles, of which 1,183 square miles consists of land and 2.9 square miles is water. McLean County is the largest county in the state of Illinois and is larger than the land area of Rhode Island. 

Major Highways

McLean County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, McLean County had 3,289 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 11 were fatal, 734 resulted in injuries, and 114 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through McLean County include: Interstate 39, Interstate 55, Interstate 74, U.S. Highway 24, U.S. Highway 51, U.S. Highway 66, U.S. Highway 136, U.S. Highway 150, Illinois Route 9, Illinois Route 54, Illinois Route 122, Illinois Route 165, and Illinois Route 251. 

Climate and Weather

McLean County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 86 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 14 °F during winter. On average, McLean County gets 37.5 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

McLean County has approximately 65,104 households with 48.5% of these households consisting of married couples and 31.4% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of McLean County is $57,642 and the median income for families is $77,093 making McLean County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
