Introduction
Mercer County, with the county seat of Aledo, has a population of 16,434 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for Hugh Mercer, a physician and general during the American Revolution.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Mercer County has a total area of 569 square miles, of which 561 square miles consists of land and 7.5 square miles is water.
Major Highways
Mercer County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, education, manufacturing, and medicine, keeping its roadways busy. Mercer County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 84 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 11 °F during winter. On average, Mercer County gets 35.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.
