Introduction

Moultrie County, with the county seat of Sullivan, has a population of 14,846 as of the last U.S. Census. The county is named for South Carolinian Revolutionary War hero William Moultrie.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Moultrie County has a total area of 344 square miles, of which 336 square miles is land and 8.5 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Moultrie County roadways are often busy with residents traveling to and from work, school, and the many outdoor activities available in the area. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including trucking accidents, work zone accidents, car accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Moultrie County had 227 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, three (3) were fatal, 76 resulted in injuries, and 22 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways in Moultrie County include: U.S. Route 36, Illinois Route 16, Illinois Route 32, Illinois Route 121, and Illinois Route 133.

Climate and Weather

The average temperature of Moultrie County ranges between lows of 19°F in January and 87°F in July. The average precipitation of Moultrie County 39.4 inches, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and fall accidents, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

As of the 2010 U.S. Census, there were 5,758 households in Moultrie County with 4,053 families in residence. 31.8 percent of households had children aged 18 or under, and the median age was 40.3 years old, making Moultrie County a young, middle-class family community with a median income of $46,364 per household and $54,494 per family.
