Introduction

Rock Island County, with the county seat of Rock Island, has a population of 147,546 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for Arsenal Island, once known as Rock Island, an island in the Mississippi River.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Rock Island County has a total area of 451 square miles, of which 428 square miles consists of land and 24 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Rock Island County has a strong agricultural presence and many residents working in the medical field, farming, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Rock Island County had 3,430 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, seven (7) were fatal, 722 resulted in injuries, and 93 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries. 

The major highways that run through Rock Island County include: Interstate 74, Interstate 80, Interstate 88, Interstate 280, U.S. Highway 6, U.S. Highway 67, U.S. Highway 150, Illinois Route 5, Illinois Route 84, Illinois Route 92, Illinois Route 94, Illinois Route 110, and Illinois Route 192. 

Climate and Weather

Rock Island County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 85 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 13 °F during winter. On average, Rock Island County gets 35.1 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Rock Island County has approximately 61,303 households with 45.3% of these households consisting of married couples and 29.0% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Rock Island County is $46,226 and the median income for families is $58,962, making Rock Island County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
