Introduction

Sangamon County, with the county seat of Springfield, has a population of 197,465 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for the Sangamon River, which runs throughout the county.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sangamon County has a total area of 877 square miles, of which 868 square miles consists of land and 8.7 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Sangamon County has a strong agricultural presence and many residents working in the medical field, farming, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, parking and parking lot accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Sangamon County had 5,056 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 18 were fatal, 1,225 resulted in injuries, and 265 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Sangamon County include: Interstate 55, Interstate 72, U.S. Route 36, Illinois Route 4, Illinois Route 29, Illinois Route 54, Illinois Route 97, Illinois Route 104, Illinois Route 124, Illinois Route 123, and Illinois Route 125.

Climate and Weather

Sangamon County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 17 °F during winter. On average, Sangamon County gets 35.6 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

Sangamon County has approximately 82,986 households with 44.4% of these households consisting of married couples and 30.4% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Sangamon County is $52,232 and the median income for families is $66,917, making Sangamon County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
