Sangamon County, with the county seat of Springfield, has a population of 197,465 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for the Sangamon River, which runs throughout the county.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sangamon County has a total area of 877 square miles, of which 868 square miles consists of land and 8.7 square miles is water.

Sangamon County has a strong agricultural presence and many residents working in the medical field, farming, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Sangamon County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 17 °F during winter. On average, Sangamon County gets 35.6 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.
