Introduction

Wabash County, with the county seat of Mount Carmel, has a population of 11,947 as of the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for the Wabash River and its name means “pure white” after the white limestone bottom of the lake that is now obscured with mud and silt.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Wabash County has a total area of 228 square miles, of which 223 square miles consists of land and 4.3 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Wabash County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, construction and work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Wabash County had 158 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, three (3) were fatal, 38 resulted in injuries, and 10 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Wabash County include: Illinois Route 1 and Illinois Route 15. 

Climate and Weather

Wabash County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 89 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 21 °F during winter. On average, Wabash County gets 43.7 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Wabash County has approximately 5,012 households with 52.9% of these households consisting of married couples and 29.0% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Wabash County is $46,026 and the median income for families is $55,611, making Wabash County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
