Introduction

Wayne County, with the county seat of Fairfield, has a population of 16,760 as of the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named for General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, an officer in the Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Wayne County has a total area of 715 square miles, of which 714 square miles consists of land and 1.7 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Wayne County has a large agricultural community, as well as many residents working in manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, construction and work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Wayne County had 359 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, two (2) were fatal, 79 resulted in injuries, and 24 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Wayne County include: Interstate 64, U.S. Highway 45, Illinois Route 15, and Illinois Route 242.

Climate and Weather

Wayne County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 20 °F during winter. On average, Wayne County gets 45 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Wayne County has approximately 7,102 households with 55.1% of these households consisting of married couples and 28.7% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Wayne County is $39,207 and the median income for families is $47,879, making Wayne County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
