Introduction

Will County, with the county seat of Joliet, has a population of 677,560 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is named for Dr. Conrad Will, a businessman and politician involved in salt production in southern Illinois.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Will County has a total area of 849 square miles, of which 837 square miles consists of land and 12 square miles consists of water. 

Major Highways

Will County roads and highways are frequently busy with residents traveling back and forth to work, school, and to the activities in the area. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural trucks, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Will County had 14,519 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 47 were fatal, 3,232 resulted in injuries, and 434 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Will County include: Interstate 55, Interstate 57, Interstate 80, Interstate 355, U.S. Route 6, U.S. Highway 30, U.S. Highway 45, U.S. Highway 52, Illinois Route 1, Illinois Route 7, Illinois Route 43, Illinois Route 50, Illinois Route 53, Illinois Route 59, Illinois Route 102, Illinois Route 113, Illinois Route 126, Illinois Route 129, Illinois Route 171, and Illinois Route 394.

Climate and Weather

Will County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 85 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 12 °F during winter. On average, Will County gets 36.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Will County has approximately 225,256 households with 61.9% of these households consisting of married couples and 44.0% with children under the age of 18. The median household income in Will County is $75,906 and for families the median income is $85,488, making Will County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
