Belt sanders are powerful and aggressive tools designed to strip wood or metal as quickly as possible. Sometimes sanders are a portable unit that can be moved across the surface of the wood or they can be mounted and used as a bench sander. Whether a worker is using a stationary or hand-held unit, they are likely to be exposed to large amounts of debris and sawdust, putting them at risk for serious, and sometimes deadly injuries.

If you have been injured in a sander accident, contact Mike Agruss Law for a free consultation. We are a Chicago-based injury law firm representing individuals (and their families) who have suffered an injury in an accident. We will handle your case quickly and advise you every step of the way, and we will not hesitate to go to trial for you. Lastly, Mike Agruss Law is not paid attorneys’ fees unless we win your case. Our no-fee promise is that simple. You have nothing to risk when you hire us – only the opportunity to seek justice.

Injuries Caused by Sanders

Sanders consists of a pair of drums that turn a loop of sandpaper that has been fitted around them and is powered by a motor. They come in a variety of sizes and brands, including Black and Decker, Makita, and DeWalt. Workers using sanders are often exposed to large quantities of airborne debris and sawdust as they work, potentially causing injuries to the lungs, including pleurisy, tumors, and cancer.

In addition to these contaminants, sanders can cause other injuries, which include:

  • Eye injuries – Even with the use of protective eye gear, fine particulates can remain in the air for some time. This debris can enter the eyes and cause irritation, corneal scratches, or can become lodged into the eye.
  • Burns – Both the surface of the sander and the item being sanded can become extremely hot due to friction. If the guards designed to protect a worker are not in place, they can become seriously burned.
  • Lacerations – Guards on sanders are also designed to prevent lacerations. When these guards fail, serious lacerations, amputation, and disfigurement are possible.
  • Posture problems – Adequate warnings should be provided for anyone using a sander, including how to use the machine properly and how to position themselves to avoid injury.

If you or a loved one was injured due to a sander injury, you may have a claim against the manufacturer if the sander was dangerous or defective, or you may have a worker’s compensation claim. An experienced personal injury lawyer can review your case and determine who is liable for your injuries and what compensation you may be entitled to.
