A spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when there is any damage to the spinal cord resulting in a loss of motor and/or sensory function of some part or parts of the body. These result from high-energy trauma such as a motor vehicle collision, a harsh fall, or a contact sports injury. Since the spinal cord aids in the central nervous system’s (CNS) function, any damage here can cause an immense change in the affected person’s life.

SCIs are very powerful injuries that can strongly impact the victim’s life. It will take immediate medical attention and action to try and recover from this injury, but more than anything, the chance of recovery depends on the severity, type, and level of injury. While painkillers such as steroids could temporarily relieve some pain of the injury and surgery or physical therapy could fix aspects of the damage, it would take an extensive amount of time to fully recover from one of these injuries (upwards of a year).

Generally, any remaining loss of function present after 12 months is far more likely to become a permanent condition. The majority of SCIs seem to be permanent because they cause direct damage to the nerves that are a part of the CNS. These nerves send signals to the brain and control countless functions. When these signals are disrupted, the body cannot function as it once did and the effects are typically permanent. Fairly incomplete or minor SCIs are more likely to recover to a greater extent.
