Illinois requires anyone with knowledge of a dog bite to report the incident to a state health administrator or their representative within 24 hours. It is also unlawful for the owner of the dog to give away, sell, hide, or euthanize the dog until the animal is released from the 10-day quarantine that is required by law.

The report that will be filed is important because it begins a case on the offending animal and alerts officials that a possibly dangerous dog is in the area. When officials know that a dog is prone to biting, they can require the owner to take specific actions to keep the general public safe. The report also documents the incident and injuries you have sustained, which strengthens your case when it comes time to discuss a settlement with the insurance company or pursue a civil suit against the dog’s owner.

Dog bite attacks are both painful and expensive. Not only will you have the initial medical bills after an attack, but you will likely have follow-up appointments, medications, possible surgeries, rehabilitation, and missed work with lost wages depending on how severe the dog bite attack was.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a dog bite attack, we at Mike Agruss Law are here for you every step of the way to ensure that your rights are protected and you are fully compensated for your injuries and losses, and this includes working on your behalf to ensure a favorable settlement.
