Head, neck, and whiplash-related injuries may be more common in auto accidents than we think, and studies from HG.org show that these injuries are possible even in mild collisions and fender-benders. There are multiple types of nerve damage that can occur in an accident, and each has its own symptoms and types of necessary treatment.

They may involve either pressure, cutting, or stretching of the nerves, and the most common types of damage from an auto accident include:

  • Whiplash – A sudden, violent snapping motion of the head and/or neck which typically causes pinching or stretching of the injured nerves;
  • Blunt force trauma – This involves hitting your head or limbs on a hard surface either inside or outside the vehicle, which typically causes compression of nerves;
  • Lacerations – These are deep cuts in the skin sustained in an accident which can cut or sever the nerves in the injured area.

There are several symptoms that are indicative of nerve damage, which include: partial or full paralysis of limbs or appendages; muscle pain or weakness; twitching and other uncontrolled muscle movement; numbness or tingling in the skin or limbs; and increased sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

Treatment options can range from physical therapy and medication to minor and major surgical procedures. Only trained professional health care providers can properly diagnose the type of nerve damage you’ve sustained and what types of treatment will be best, so medical attention should be sought as soon as possible after your accident occurred.
