Another case of elder abuse in a long term care facility has just surfaced, this time in Tucson, Arizona. Two caregivers at Asterion Acres Home, an assisted care facility, were arrested after a 93-year-old woman was injured. Staff at the facility had reported multiple instances of abuse by the two employees, separately; most recently she had been struck with an open hand and fist, and hit with a remote control and other objects. She was also thrown onto her bed and into her wheelchair.
The incidents had been ongoing for several weeks; deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department were called on July 17, witnessed the patient’s injuries, and arranged her transport to a hospital. Both employees, 29-year-old Annuhar Jesus Ruiz and 67-year-old Elisa Moreno, were taken off the facility’s schedule and arrested. Ruiz was charged with four counts of vulnerable adult abuse; Moreno was also charged with elder abuse. The Sheriff’s office said no other residents were hurt or endangered, and no other staff was involved.
