On August 15, 2013, a 62-year-old man fell asleep at the wheel and drove his car off of the road into a creek in Edwardsville, Illinois. Paul Wanda was trapped inside his upside car, which was submerged in two feet of water, for more than 2 minutes. An off duty firefighter arrived and jumped into the creek to help Wanda. Selmer lifted the man’s head to help him breathe, then broke the car window to get him out. Wanda stopped breathing, and then started breathing again; other rescue workers arrived (a passerby called 911) and handed Selmer a knife to cut Wanda’s seatbelt—soon after this, he was freed, and flown to St. Louis University Hospital.
