Here is some safety tips courtesy of the National Farmers Union (NFU) to mitigate the risks of working with grain bins:
- Beware of the risk of entrapment, as entering a bin after some of the grain has been removed can be very dangerous. A grain in poor condition, which can create bridging, pyramids, and cones, add to this risk. Entrapment can cause suffocation and even death, so workers must always follow the proper safety cautions if it is necessary to enter the bin.
- A harness and anchored lifeline are strongly recommended, as is a second worker to properly monitor the situation.
- Stay away from operating augers, as their moving components can create a risk of serious injury.
- Machinery should always be turned off while being worked on and equipment should be tagged-out before entering a grain bin.
