The spinal cord is one of the most essential components in our body structure. It houses part of the central nervous system (CNS), which aids us with our reflexes, sensory processing, and many more functions relevant to our daily life. The spinal cord also supports our neck and head as well as keeping us upright and straight as a whole. A spinal cord injury is when some damage or fracture to the spinal cord affects its structure and function, and it can be extremely debilitating and life-changing. This is because it can affect the CNS which is in charge of motor and sensory function.
While swimming may be a fun and relaxing activity, it also carries some serious risks which include spinal injuries. Many of these injuries are caused by diving accidents. When a person dives head-first into a pool and hits their head, they can also damage their spinal cord and cause injuries such as vertebral fractures, bulging or herniated discs, or a spinal cord injury. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that diving accidents cause about 800 spinal cord injuries each year. Despite these dangers, you can take certain measures to protect yourself from the risk that comes along with diving:
  • You should never dive in shallow water as the risk of hitting your head is extremely higher than if you did so in a deep area of the pool since the solid, concrete bottom of the pool is much closer.
  • When you are diving in a safe, deep area of the pool, you should make sure to level off quickly after you hit the water. This means avoiding going straight down for the entire dive. Rather, you should hit the water and try to become parallel with the pool floor soon after.
  • Assess the appropriate distance that you should jump off of a diving board. By overestimating how far you should jump from the board, your head may hit the wall or some part of the concrete far ahead of the diving board.
