Sprouters Northwest Expands Recall

On February 2nd, 2013, Sprouters Northwest expanded its earlier product recall, over fears of Listeria monocytogene contamination. The recall is voluntary, and the Kent, Washington-based company is working jointly with the Washington State Agriculture Department and the US Food and Drug Administration. Sprouters Northwest is now recalling all sprouted seeds, which includes their 3-Bean Munchies, Brocco Sandwich Sprouts, Alfalfa Sprouts, Bean Sprouts, Broccoli Sprouts, Clover Sprouts, Deli Sprouts, Spicy Sprouts, and its Wheatgrass and Pea Shoots. The potentially tainted sprouts were sold through January 30 in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and British Columbia, Canada. Listeria can cause food poisoning, and in extreme cases, miscarriage.

A separate product recall also involves a listeria risk; a supermarket chain based in Pennsylvania is currently recalling crab spread it sold at many locations, possibly tainted with Listeria monocytogenes. The company, GIANT, and its sister company, MARTINS, voluntarily recalled Gold Coast Crab Spread on January 31st, after a sample tested positive for the bacteria. So far, no cases of illness have been reported; the product was sold in 8 oz. containers.
