Doctors are not required to report dog bites to the police department, but if a dog bite victim presents at a doctor’s office or hospital, the doctor is required to report the bite to the state health department or animal control agency following a detailed report and treatment. In fact, according to the Illinois Dog Bite Statute, anyone with knowledge of a dog bite is required to report it to the state health administrator or their representative as soon as possible.

If you or a loved one was bitten or attacked by a dog, the doctor will question you about the incident and make a report of relevant information. This completed report will be sent to the appropriate state health administrator who will then determine what further measures must be taken. This normally involves placing the dog under quarantine for 10 days, either at home or with a licensed veterinarian, as necessary for the specific circumstances of your incident.

The report of the dog bite incident is important. Not only does this alert officials to a possibly dangerous dog and help prevent further attacks, but it also shows a record of your injuries. Dog bite attacks are expensive and are often followed by multiple doctor’s appointments, and if the injury is severe, surgeries, rehabilitation, and missed work. This official report strengthens your case when it comes time for a settlement or civil lawsuit to receive compensation for your damages.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a dog bite attack, we at Mike Agruss Law are here for you every step of the way to ensure that your rights are protected and you are fully compensated for your injuries and losses, and this includes working on your behalf to ensure a favorable settlement.
