The information in your credit report is used to evaluate your application for credit, insurance, employment, and renting a home. Your credit report contains information about where you live, how you pay your bills, whether you have been sued or arrested, and whether you have filed for bankruptcy.

Lenders, insurance companies, landlords, and more will use your credit report to decide if they want to work with you. This is why it’s important to ensure this information is accurate and up-to-date. Monitoring your credit report is also important to spot signs of identity theft.

Do you know what’s in your credit report?

Your Right to a Free Credit Report

Every consumer is granted the right to a free copy of their credit report from each of the three nationwide credit reporting agencies under the 2003 Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act, which amended the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

The goal of these laws is to make sure consumers are informed, treated fairly, and given the chance to identify and fight identity theft via annual credit reports.

Along with a free report once a year, you are also entitled to a free credit report if:

  • A company has taken adverse action against you, such as denying an application for credit, insurance, or employment,
  • You are unemployed and want to look for work in the next 60 days,
  • You are on welfare,
  • Your report has mistakes due to fraud or identity theft.

You have the right to get a free copy of your credit report, once every 12 months, from each of the nationwide credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The three nationwide credit reporting companies set up a website, a toll-free telephone number, and a mailing address through which you can order your free annual report.

Directions

To order your free credit report:

Visit www.annualcreditreport.com
Call 877-322-8228, or

Mail a request to:

Annual Credit Report Request Service
P.O. Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

There are three major credit bureaus: as such, you may have an Experian credit report, an Equifax credit report, and a TransUnion credit report. When you request your credit reports, you can choose to get them all at once, or one at a time. Some consumers choose to get one credit report at a time to monitor for signs of identity theft and get a broader idea of their credit over time. Keep in mind that the reports across the three credit bureaus will be different, as creditors are not required to report to all three bureaus, and most report only to the bureau with which they have a business relationship.

What You Need to Obtain Your Free Credit Report

You will need to provide your:

  • Name,
  • Address,
  • Social Security number, and
  • Date of birth.

Each of the credit bureaus will also ask you questions to maintain the security of your credit information. These questions are multiple choice and may ask you the amount of your monthly mortgage payment or an address at which you have lived.

Beware of Impostor Websites

Only www.AnnualCreditReport.com is authorized to take orders for the free credit reports you are entitled to under federal law. Any other website that promises a free credit report, credit score, or credit monitoring is not a part of the legally mandated program. In some cases, the “free” report or product may also come with strings attached. If you have to provide your credit or debit card information at all, the service is not free, and you are most likely enrolling in a free trial period for a subscription service.

How Often Should You Check Your Credit Report?

It is crucial that you check your credit report at least once a year to correct errors and to detect unauthorized activity that may be detrimental to credit scores. Once again, the information in your credit report affects whether or not you get a loan, and it determines your interest rate when you do get a loan. The information also affects insurance, renting a home, and even getting a job. Therefore, you want to make sure the information in your credit report is accurate, complete, and up-to-date before you apply for a loan or a credit card, before you apply for a job, before you apply for insurance, and before you submit a rental application. Finally, monitoring your credit report will help guard against identity theft.

I was sitting on my couch on a Sunday morning when I overheard them talking about Clever Credit Fix. I had to make more inquiry about how I could get this done without falling victim to a hacker again with the intention to seek advice regarding my late payment, negative items and how I could raise my credit score across my three credit bureaus reports. I got in contact with the hacker the following days and he replied quickly about how I could get everything done within the next 72 hours. I never knew I could live a happily live once more until I paid off my outstanding credit debt on my credit report and got approved for an auto loan deal worth over $178k within few weeks then I can finally testify that I got my credit score been boosted to 810 without no physical contact or any traces been found on my credit report activities. You can make contact with him anytime through C L E V E R C R E D I T F I X 1 @ G M A I L . C O M

It's just that I have SOOOOOO many hospital bills and dr bills and etc.... showing up on my credit report that I am constantly being taken for court for that I know I had Medicaid when some of these were acquired and some don't even know what they are from over 10 years ago. I'm very pleased that there are good attorneys out there that can fight for people like me. She did a great job helping me fight my case. I would recommend her to all my friends and family. Yes I would like to thank them personally as I will send them a great recommendation. It's great to have lawyers that care about the people. Some lawyers or attorneys just care about money or getting paid. These attorneys that helped me cared about me more than that. I will be sending an email directly to them thanking them for helping me win my case. It's nice to have attorneys and lawyers that won't quit fighting for a persons case til it's won!

Hi i just saw a post about you guys on a website where you've dealt with the company known as Allied Interstate LLC before. I'm dealing with them and their track record is pretty bad so im prepping for the worst. I wasn't able to pay my credit card bill in full and then all of a sudden I'm getting calls from them about it. It's my cell i'd perfer to speak with somebody before giving any more information as at this point i'm not sure where i stand legally with this matter. i don't think so but i've never dealt with this sort of thing before!

I believe I am being harassed by debt collector, I have no idea who they are. They have called my work with only a recorded message. The call is from a 716-816-3556 number out of NY but they always leave a return callback number at 844-952-7351. They have called and left the same message just stating that there are legal charges pending against me and that I need to call back the 844 number with a reference number. They called with a 'live' person this morning who identified himself as Mike Williams with the State of Tennessee Legal Services department and told me that they would be out to serve me papers this afternoon between 2 and 4. He told me to call the 844709-9833 number to discuss the case pending against me. I am a victim of identity theft and I am 100% sure this is something related to that. There is no "State of Tennessee Legal Services" either. I googled and started calling and no one knows of that group!

I in need of legal help with a debt dispute/violation of my rights. The reason I am filing this complaint is due to the company unfair debt collection practices. nOn or about August 21, 2014, I return said call to Frontier Financial Group who informs me my debt was transfer to them. I was told I owed $487.50. The person on the phone also threaten to take legal action against me if I don't pay them. Furthermore, my debt was with Lighthouse Recovery Associates. I was making monthly payments to them until one of my payments was return due to the company closing down. The company telephone number was disconnected also. Lastly, when I received notice from Frontier Financial Group for payment I requested them to validate the debt. Instead of the company properly validating the debt, they sent me type letter as a form of validation.§ 807. False or misleading representations [15 USC 1692e] (5) The threat to take any action that cannot legally be taken or that is not intended to be taken. That the debt be eliminated as paid in full. The letter copied into the chat is what happen. I filed a copy with the consumer financial protection bureau!

I have a question I hope u can help me with!. Can a creditor take more than you authorize them to take for payment?. Yes I have a account with Grand Furniture and fell behind, so I called and setup a payment for 200.00, which she stated that their was a 3.00 fee I informed her that I only had enough for them to take the 200.00, she submit the payment for 203.00, after I told her the 200.00 was all I had, so now O. Sorry ! I have a overdraft charge to my account, they have done this before and I just can not afford to keep paying the drafts chargers., when they have been told not to debt my account!

I sent an inquiry to the website, but I am currently being harassed by a debt collection agency by the name of Dynamic recovery solutions, regarding a debt that was included in my bankruptcy nearly 20 years ago,,,they also threatened charges to be filed against me claiming that I have committed fraud. I also saved the threatening message from them on my voicemail, not sure,,,I'm just confused as to how this collection agency thinks its ok to threaten people like this,,,especially on a debt that was discharges through a bankruptcy nearly 20 years ago,,,it seems to me that the course of action that they are taking is no less than criminal,,although I am not a legal expert,,,the situation is very upsetting to say the leas!
